The Buddhist monks are supposed to be aware of at least the basics of the Pali canons when mixing along with the laity. They require the knowledge of Pali canons when delivering the sermons. Venerable Uditha Thera’s attempt is to provide an annotated commentary in general to the Pali Canon and other established commentaries. He tries to solve certain conflicts found in the commentaries written to the Pali canon. If there are conflicts found the Buddhist canon Venerable Hittatiye Uditha Thera writes in his preface they must not be hidden from the general readership. They should be brought forward and subjected to logical reasoning. Only then the Buddha’s teachings will shine. Venerable Hittatiye Uditha Thera offers a lengthy analysis to such conflicts.
