Anyone familiar with overnight pirith recitals should be even more familiar with Atanatiya Sutta. This sutta or paritta is recited a little past midnight and the Buddhist monks give a little emphasis to the vocal chords when they recite it. The Buddhist devotees have a high regard for the Atanatiya paritta especially for its power to tame the non - humans (yakkhas). Jinadasa Rajapaksa however offers a critical analysis on the authenticity of the Atanatiya Sutta as a teaching of the Buddha. He makes an attempt to establish that the Atanatiya Paritta does not belong to the Buddha’s teachings. The book is an interesting research with controversial opinions presented.
