The Panchathanthra originally written in Sanskrit by pandit Vishree Sherman of ancient India comprised of five text namely Mitrabheda (dissension) Mitra Samprapthi (became acquainted) Kakolikaya Labda Pranasha and Apaseekshitha karaka. Pandith Vishree Sherman’s objective in presenting these five thanthras was to portray to the society lessons on social ethics through a legend – an allegory using wild beasts as main characters of these stories. Panchathanthtra Sri Sumangala annotated edition is limited to the first episode on thanthra out of above five episodes (thanthras). Sub titled dissention of friends. According to the editor this text is designed for the novices who wish to study Sanskrit language. It opens with an introductory preface followed by the Sinhala translation of each story and prescribed Sanskrit text. In the explanatory section each story re - produced is followed by a word for word paraphrase supported by the construed Sinhala translation and additional annotations where necessary and relevant.
