This celebrated epic poem authored by Kalidasa is considered a great classical work in Sanskrit literature. The work contains 19 cantos which narrate the story of Raghu dynasty and its descendants - Raghu Dasharatha and Rama. Many commentaries have been written to this famous epic. The narrative begins with Raghu leading a military excursion to Transoxiana. The warrior conquers the people on the way. As he reaches Vankshu his army wars with the Hepthalites and Mlecchas aka barbarians. Raghu’s army beats the Hepthalites and thus begins a long account of the Raghuvamsa. The epic is written in 21 Sanskrit metres - Anuṣṭup Indravajrā Upajāti Upendravajrā Aupacchandasika Toṭaka Drutavilambita Puṣpitāgrā Praharṣiṇī Mañjubhāṣiṇī Mattamayūra Mandākrāntā Mālinī Rathoddhatā Vaṃśastha Vasantatilakā Vaitālīya Śārdūlavikrīḍita Śālinī Svāgatā and Hariṇ. The Sinhala edition contains the original Sanskrit script of Raghuvansa for the first three cantos followed by the Sinhala transcript and meaning of each and every verse.
