The play Nagananda which means happiness of the serpents in Sanskrit is said to have been scripted by King Harsha who ruled India from 606 CE and 648 CE. Nagananda is considered one of the greatest dramas in Sanskrit literature. In five acts the play narrates the tale of Prince Jimutavahana’s efforts to protect the nagas (serpents). This is said to be based on a story in Kathasaritsagara an ancient Sanskrit classic. But the play deals with the tale in quite a different way. King Harsha is credited with handling the story in an original way with interesting plot twists.
