Theravadee Purushaya

Theravada Man written by Manuka Wijesinghe is translated to Sinhala. This translation of a novel by Manuka Wijesinghe reflects the changes in the hope aspirations beliefs attitudes of the Sinhalese people over hundred (100) years British colonial rule in Sri Lanka. Iskole Mahattaya is a product of British dominated English education and is a school principal. Yet his views are strongly influenced by the philosophy of non - attachment advocated by Theravada Buddhist teachings. Though he claims to be a follower of Theravada tradition there appears to be an inner conflict between sex instinct and Theravada Buddhist doctrine. He is the type of Theravada man who is caught in a mess of traditional beliefs and customs superstitions of astrology numerology etc. Finally he succumbs to the dictates of the heart and marries a school teacher.
